Why this site starts with diagnosis

Timber damage is easy to oversimplify. A soft joist can be blamed on dry rot when the real issue is a long-standing plumbing leak. Old beetle holes can be mistaken for an active infestation. Dark timber can be assumed rotten even when it is still hard and structurally sound.

The useful sequence is to identify the moisture source, establish whether fungal or insect activity is current, assess how much sound timber remains and only then decide what work is justified.
